LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – Finding a treatment plan that works for you during any diagnosis can be a challenge.
A local breast cancer survivor is now sharing her story, urging patients like her, to be confident in their plan, by receiving a “second opinion” from a professional.
“Cancer free.”
For Jaimie Hutchison, those two words seemed far away two years ago.
“You think of all the things you could’ve missed that you want to be there for,” said Jaimie Hutchison, a breast cancer survivor.
That’s why she took action in seeking a treatment plan that was best for her, after being diagnosed with HER2 Positive Breast Cancer.
“I think it’s always important to know what your options are, and when you’re doing something like cancer treatment, you’re overwhelmed. And so you don’t know what you don’t know,” said Hutchison.
Having choices like a “second opinion” on a treatment plan can help patients feel like they have control.
“I think it helps patients know they’re on the right path and build confidence in their team. Sometimes allows for a secondary look at their biopsies or their imaging. As we all know, we’re human and it’s always great to have multiple eyes on cases. So, second opinions are things I encourage from patients,” said Dr. Dan Isaac, a Hematologist and Medical Oncologist at Karmanos Cancer Institute at McLaren Greater Lansing and MSU Health Care.
From cancer patient to cancer survivor, Jaimie is back to doing what she loves.
“At the end of the day, I’m glad to be singing again,” said Hutchison.
And she now has a new mission: using her voice to advocate a message to others like her:
“It’s all worth it going through treatment and all those things are minor when you have a full life that you’re able to continue to live,” said Hutchison.
Jaimie recently celebrated her 28th Anniversary with her husband. She says she’s grateful she can keep doing life with those she loves.
Jaimie says patients have a journey as survivors as well.
